Fund Raising Effort for Joe Deangelo

Updated On: Oct 11, 2008 (10:48:00)

A fund raising effort is being conducted for our fellow firefighter injured in a vehicle accident.  Firefighter Paramedic Ed Lyell will be running in an Ultramarathon in October.  He has stated that he will be running it in honor of Firefighter Joe Deangelo who was recently injured in a motorcycle accident and is in need of our support.

The race is called the "San Francisco One Day" and will be held October 25 and 26th. Ed stated, "I ran this race last year and covered 60 miles in 24 hours. I am asking my fellow Firefighters to sponsor me for each mile I run. It could be 50 cents or anything a mile."

For further information about the race, go to http://www.pctrailruns.com/SF_One_Day.htm .

Naval Base San Diego Firefighters Recognized for Life Saving Efforts

SAN DIEGO – At a ceremony on Naval Base San Diego July 29, five Navy civilian firefighters were recognized for saving a 21-year-old Sailor’s life.

Engine Company Captain and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Donald Poer, Firefighter/Paramedic Cory Allen, Firefighter/Paramedic Ron Hudnet, Firefighter/EMT Landon Fimbres and Firefighter/EMT Anthony Glorioso were lauded for their life saving efforts at a ceremony at NBSD’s Fire Station 6.  NBSD Commanding Officer Rear Adm. (Sel.) Dixon Smith, NBSD Executive Officer Cmdr. Sharee Fish, NBSD Fire Chief Fletcher Dahman and Navy Region Southwest Fire Chief Jaimie Woods were on hand for the presentation.

Responding to a call on May 8, 2008, paramedics arrived on scene to aid a Sailor who was having difficulty breathing as result of a serious allergic reaction to peanuts.  The paramedics administered IV fluids and medications and the Sailor improved en route to a local hospital.firefighter_2.jpg

“Paramedics were on-scene within 3 minutes,” said Regional Fire Chief Jaimie Woods, adding that this “greatly increased the potential for a successful outcome.”

Fimbres was unable to attend the ceremony because he was assisting with the Telegraph Fire in Mariposa County, Calif.

“This incident is an excellent example of the results of continued training and coordinated response of fire-based emergency medical care within Navy Fire and Emergency Services,” said Woods.  “All firefighters train continuously and responded to over 3,000 incidents last year, enabling them to utilize their skills.  Although the fire station atmosphere may appear casual on the surface, it's all business when it comes to an emergency.”

Navy Region Southwest’s civilian firefighting force is a diversely trained group – capable of combating airfield, shipboard, wildland, and structural fires.  Emergency medical qualifications are a requirement and Navy Region Southwest has both Basic and Advanced Life Support capabilities with emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

President Bush Signs H.R. 4986, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 into Law

Updated On: Mar 13, 2008 (10:40:00)

The Act authorizes funding for the defense of the United States and its interests abroad, for military construction, and for national security-related energy programs.

H.R.4986 includes the provision (Below): Section 1080 (mutual aid), 1113 (uniform).

SEC.1080. RETENTION OF REIMBURSTMENT FOR PROVIOSION OF RECIPOROCAL FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES.

Section 5 of the Act of May 27, 1955 (chapter 105; 69 Stat. 67; 42 U.S.C. 1856d) is amended

(1)     by striking “Funds” and inserting “(a) Funds”; and

(2)     by adding at the end the following new subsection:

“(b) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (a),all sums received for any Department of Defense activity for fire protection rendered pursuant to this Act shall be credited to the appropriation fund or account from which the expenses were paid.  Amount so credited shall be merged with the funds in such appropriation fund or account and shall be available for the funds with which the funds are merged.”

SEC.113. UNIFORM ALLOWANCE FOR CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES.

Section 1593(b) of title 10, United States Code, is amended by striking “$400.00 per year. “And inserting” “$400.00 (or such higher maximum amount at the Secretary of Defense may be regulation prescribed).”

Section 1113 removes the previous maximum rate of $400.00 and should effectuate a change within DoD to provide uniform allowance parity with the non-DoD federal firefighter rate of $800.00 per year as prescribed by current law and OPM.

SCI Case

Updated On: Jul 10, 2007 (07:18:00)

Members, From IAFF 16th District:

IAFF attorneys have received a favorable decision in the matter involving our federal fire fighters at San Clemente Island California .  The fire fighters work a 168 vs 144 hour schedule and the employees through their IAFF site rep (F33) attempted to address pay calculation issues with the employer several years ago.

Based on the ruling (attached) the employees will be receiving back pay and other benefits as appropriate.
David Ricksecker , from the law firm Woodley and McGillivary did a great job on this case.

This is another great example of how the IAFF guardian and FLSA grant policies can work for our members.
