Naval Base San Diego Firefighters Recognized for Life Saving Efforts
SAN DIEGO – At a ceremony on Naval Base San Diego July 29, five Navy civilian firefighters were recognized for saving a 21-year-old Sailor’s life.
Engine Company Captain and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Donald Poer, Firefighter/Paramedic Cory Allen, Firefighter/Paramedic Ron Hudnet, Firefighter/EMT Landon Fimbres and Firefighter/EMT Anthony Glorioso were lauded for their life saving efforts at a ceremony at NBSD’s Fire Station 6. NBSD Commanding Officer Rear Adm. (Sel.) Dixon Smith, NBSD Executive Officer Cmdr. Sharee Fish, NBSD Fire Chief Fletcher Dahman and Navy Region Southwest Fire Chief Jaimie Woods were on hand for the presentation.
Responding to a call on May 8, 2008, paramedics arrived on scene to aid a Sailor who was having difficulty breathing as result of a serious allergic reaction to peanuts. The paramedics administered IV fluids and medications and the Sailor improved en route to a local hospital.
“Paramedics were on-scene within 3 minutes,” said Regional Fire Chief Jaimie Woods, adding that this “greatly increased the potential for a successful outcome.”
Fimbres was unable to attend the ceremony because he was assisting with the Telegraph Fire in Mariposa County, Calif.
“This incident is an excellent example of the results of continued training and coordinated response of fire-based emergency medical care within Navy Fire and Emergency Services,” said Woods. “All firefighters train continuously and responded to over 3,000 incidents last year, enabling them to utilize their skills. Although the fire station atmosphere may appear casual on the surface, it's all business when it comes to an emergency.”
Navy Region Southwest’s civilian firefighting force is a diversely trained group – capable of combating airfield, shipboard, wildland, and structural fires. Emergency medical qualifications are a requirement and Navy Region Southwest has both Basic and Advanced Life Support capabilities with emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
